The Canadian Citizenship Act came into effect on 1 January 1947. The act established Canadian citizenship as a distinct category and allowed residents of Canada to obtain citizenship regardless of their country of origin. The current law says both Canadian-born and naturalized citizens are equally entitled to the right and duties of the citizen. Under the Act, all persons born in Canada are Canadian citizens at birth, with minor exceptions i.e., diplomats’ children.

However, applying for the Canadian citizenship there are several requirements you will have to satisfy in order to meet the eligibility requirements:

• be a permanent resident
• have lived in Canada for 3 out of the last 5 years
• have filed your taxes, if you need to
• pass a citizenship test
• prove your language skills
